Amata
Amata is an evocative new work that pushes the limits of physicality, passion and grace, choreographed by Black Grace founder and artistic director Neil Ieremia.
Meaning “begin” in Samoan, Amata explores the personal conflict and its impact on those closest to us when the anaesthetic of materialism wears off, and we can no longer ignore the pain of conflicting expectations and loss.
The performance is a deeply personal work and is structured in a number of distinct sections, featuring a company of 12 women. It is designed by John Verryt, with costumes by Elizabeth Whiting and lighting designed by Bryan Caldwell.
Amata is a celebration of the human spirit. Inspired by explorations into our ability to love fearlessly, lose bravely, learn endlessly and survive, to once again embrace life and accept change.
AMATA: a time to cry; a time to laugh; a time to grieve; a time to dance
“Ieremia's choreography is complex and clever and demands an exceptional physicality from the dancers - which they deliver, inarguably, through every flex and spring, stamp and shudder, and toss of their long, untamed tresses.”New Zealand Herald 2007
