Neil Ieremia is currently at The Banff Centre, where he is Lead Choreographer for the Indigenous Dance Residency. Congratulations to Black Grace Dancers Tupua Tigafua and Thomas Fonua who received support from Creative New Zealand and The Banff Centre to attend this Dance Residency!

Neil Ieremia brings an eclectic mix of his favourite pieces of music ranging from hip-hop to country with an exciting new movement vocabulary to create Verses. This week marks our Artistic Associate, Wendy Wallace’s last week here in the studio. Wendy has been with us for nearly three years, and she will be greatly missed. Wendy will be returning to Australia to spend time with her family before moving onto exciting new ventures.
We are lucky to still have Wendy share her knowledge and wisdom with us as she will now sit as a Trustee of The Black Grace Trust.
We wish Wendy all the best with her future endeavors.

Neil Ieremia and Black Grace would like to thank everyone who auditioned for the upcoming UrbanYOUTHMovement project last weekend.
Our studio was filled with youthful energy and everyone worked so hard to give their all. The successful applicants have all been notified and rehearsals commence this Saturday! Keep an eye out for updates on how the project is developing!

UrbanYOUTHMovement is back! Following the overwhelming response from over 100 young people who wished to participate in the 2009 UYM project and the success of YOU BETTER RUN BOY! Black Grace is pleased to announce its 2010 UYM project! Choreographer and Artistic Director, Neil Ieremia will further develop the themes explored in YOU BETTER RUN BOY! culminating in a Studio Series of performances at the Black Grace studio in downtown Auckland.
The UYM project is a rich and complex mentoring programme that in addition to teaching movement and performance skills, also teaches vital life skills that will benefit the participants well beyond the actual project.
Auditions are on the 1 and 2 May, at the Black Grace studio from 10am – 4pm (you must be available both days). To register please email wendy@blackgrace.co.nz with your full name, age, gender, name of school or university you attend, email address and phone contact.
Previous dance training is not necessary – we are looking for young people (16 – 21 years of age) with good attitudes, willing to work hard and learn new skills.

Places are strictly limited so register quickly to avoid disappointment!

Black Grace have now had their opening performance of the 2010 US and Canada tour – opening at the Leeward Community Theater in Honolulu, Hawaii. The performance went very well, complete with an oversold audience! Directly after the performance, Michael Pili Pang, Director of the Mayors Office of Culture and Arts, on behalf of the Mayor of the City and County of Honolulu, presented Neil Ieremia and the Company with a proclamation stating that February 6th 2010 is officially ‘Black Grace Day’ in Honolulu! This is a huge honour for Neil and Black Grace – and the Company would like to thank everyone involved with this, especially Vicky Holt Takamine and her Halau, and Joe Patti and crew of Leeward Community Theater for their hospitality during our stay in Honolulu.
The Company are now looking forward to their performance in Maui!

The dates are set for the 2010 tour of North America. This time Black Grace will be performing in 4 centres throughout Hawaii and 7 centres in the mainland from Austin, Texas to Princeton, New Jersey. Black Grace have also been invited to perform at the Cultural Olympiad in Vancouver, Canada at the completion of the tour. Check out our productions page for more details and new video material!

Neil Ieremia and Black Grace have recently hosted Sandra Laronde, Founding Artistic Director of Red Sky Performance and Director of Aboriginal Arts at The Banff Centre, Alberta, Canada. During her visit to New Zealand, Sandra was joined by dancer Carlos Riviera and they both had a fantastic time in Aotearoa. During their two-week stay Neil and Sandra discussed opportunities for a collaboration between Black Grace and Red Sky Performance. We will be announcing plans soon!
